David Weston of Rainy Day Women has already played at SoL as a member of the late, great Urban Spacemen. He's now playing guitar and vocals for Tony Winn's RDW, who, as the name suggests play Bob Dylan and the Band covers.
Rainy Day Women was formed in 2006 by Tony Winn to perform the songs of Bob Dylan from the 1960s through to the 00s in our own way and have fun in the process. Our first gig was at the Kelvedon Free Music Festival in Essex and it seemed to work so we're going to carry on expanding the repertoire so long as Tony can remember all the words. Although treating the songs with the care and respect that they deserve, we don't stick slavishly to the arrangements and sounds of the original versions, preferring to develop ways of playing the tunes that work well for us and sound fresh. This is pretty much what Bob has always done with his various live bands. We also play a few tunes by The Band.
Although the Rainy Day Women is a fairly new band, various members have been working together in various combinations for a number of years. David worked with Tony in the mid 1990s in the band MAMWF, playing what could possibly be described as folk rock (although as with the Rainy Day Women we seemed to manage to include all manner of musical styles along the way) versions of songs by Tony and other artists. David also appears on Tony's album 'Satan's Zoo' which utilised some of the arrangements developed by MAMWF. Tony has been playing with James' acclaimed 'Songs from the Blue House' project for a number of years and Tony and Steven have collaborated on piano based arrangements of Tony's songs both live and in the studio which can be found on Tony's 'Love Songs' album.
